You spend months designing and developing a new training course. Then you spend hours upon hours in the classroom conducting the training only to learn some participants return to work and do not apply their new skills. How frustrating! But what is the catalyst? Do you have management support? Have you designed the support tools the management team will need? As trainers, you need to make sure you’re doing your part to ensure support of the transfer of those new skills.

The goal of training is to have our learners retain the knowledge and skills they’ve gained in training so they can apply them back at the workplace. 4 Best Practices to Ensure Training Transfer

Posted by Linda Carole Pierce on 4/25/16 4:00 AM

I’m sure we have all heard the cliché, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Learners attend training programs to gain knowledge and skill to improve their performance for their current job. However, what I often hear from many learners in my courses is a big “BUT!” The “but” is typically related to the challenges faced after training when they return to work. The most common challenges mentioned are a lack of time and a lack of management support to implement the new skills back on the job. These challenges don’t bode well for training transfer!

We adopted the process you covered in our department and it works like a charm.” The only problem with this scenario is that it doesn’t happen often enough. When an organization pays for training, what they’re really paying for is improved performance. If what happens in the training doesn’t transfer back to the workplace, people are not getting what they’ve paid for.

In this blog I will look at how we, as trainers, can ensure training success where we work. This can be extremely challenging because not only do we need to learn and apply professional best practices ourselves, but we also must educate and influence those around us to allow us to implement those best practices!

How to Get Management Buy-In for Training

Posted by Marsha Weisleder on 1/20/14 3:00 AM

I  hear it all the time…"Why can’t managers be more involved in training?” “How can we get their buy-in?” “How else will learners apply what they’ve learned back on the job?”

It’s probably one of our biggest challenges. And let’s face it…if learners don’t use it, they lose it. Even worse, as trainers, we have accomplished nothing when this happens. It doesn’t matter how well the course has been designed or delivered. It’s about improving performance back on the job!
