Everything seems to be virtual these days. Banking, buying goods and services, face-to-face communication, and of course, even online learning. Most of the time, we can accomplish our online activities easily on our own; however, when you deliver synchronous/virtual classroom training for your organization we highly recommend using a producer.
I’ve taught virtual training, and having a producer as a co-facilitator certainly came in handy! A producer can assist so you can focus on the delivery of the course content. For example, a producer can conduct the warm up icebreaker, handle technical difficulties, step in if you lose your connection, arrange and insert slides, conduct poll questions and oversee other visual aids.
Your management may balk at the idea of using a producer for virtual classroom courses in your organization, so here are six benefits to help persuade them on what a worthwhile investment it is!
A producer can deal with a participant’s technical issues behind the scenes while the facilitator keeps the flow of the course moving forward. If you were on your own, you’d have to stop the course and help the learner, which would delay the class and limit learning time.
2. Save the Day Hero
Another important role of the producer is what I call the “Save the Day Hero.” Inevitably when you teach virtually, the time will come when you’re conducting a class and suddenly you lose your audio and/or internet connection. When this happens, your class comes to a complete stop and people must wait until you re-connect before the class can continue. Having a producer in class means they can step in seamlessly and teach the class until you get back online.
3. Question Watcher
While you’re busy presenting content, the producer can keep an eye on the chat room and answer questions that may arise while you’re teaching, scribe on the whiteboard, and highlight and annotate visual content to make the class more dynamic.
4. Breakout Room Facilitator
Your producer can assist in putting your students into virtual breakout rooms, and help you monitor them to make sure everyone stays on task during an activity.
5. Train New Facilitators
Facilitators-in-training can observe an experienced faciltator from behind the scenes, which allows them to gain mastery of the content, experience the “inner workings” of the course, and observe the types of questions and responses they can expect to get from participants.
Depending on the length of your virtual classes, it’s nice to give yourself and your students an audio break from listening to your voice all the time. While your producer is talking you can take a sip of water and rest your pipes!
